In nine Eastern African countries, young people are grappling with cybersecurity challenges that hinder their participation in the digital economy. According to the 2023 Eastern Africa Youth Digital Readiness Index, cyber threats are a major concern for youths across the region, with only Ethiopian youths reporting otherwise.
The index evaluates the digital preparedness of youth in Eastern Africa, ranking Kenya highest followed by Rwanda, Uganda, and Ethiopia. However, Kenya faces significant cybersecurity risks, including data breaches, online scams, and malware attacks, particularly among individuals with limited cybersecurity awareness.
Moreover, challenges such as limited internet access, high device costs, and low digital literacy further impede Kenya’s youth from fully embracing digital solutions, especially in rural areas. The demand for skilled IT professionals outstrips the supply, hindering innovation and technological advancement in the digital economy.
In Uganda, efforts to address cybercrime are commendable, but implementation lags behind, leaving individuals and businesses vulnerable. Tanzania also grapples with cybersecurity issues due to inadequate infrastructure and awareness, compromising online transactions and data security.
To mitigate these risks, the report recommends investing in cybersecurity infrastructure, raising awareness through outreach campaigns, and fostering international collaboration to combat cyber threats.
